Our 9 Big Project Before and Afters of 2016!

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! While we haven’t been actively blogging, we did do some major behind-the-scenes upgrades over the past two weeks, switching hosts and moving to our own dedicated server that will hopefully make the blog quicker and more enjoyable for everyone this year. Every year, we lay out all of our project predictions for the year–the rooms and spaces we hope to tackle in our home–and then at the end of the year we look back, sometimes comically, to see how we did. At the beginning of 2016, we predicted in this post that we’d complete 5 rooms in our home: two bathrooms (nope, nope), the master closet (no, again), the family room/playroom (yes!) and the back deck (yup!). We only checked off TWO of those. Two! But, we did have a fulfilling 2016 even still. So before we break down what we have up our sleeve…

Before And After: Our Basement Family Room is Finished!

Before and After days are always fun around here, and this one is especially sweet since we have been working on our family room in the basement for at least 8 months, a surprising amount of time when I went back to see when we started. Now, we’re calling it done (for now, I just can never really say a room is 100% finished) and I have a slew of photos to share with you. Like, remember when it used to look like this?  Probably not, that’s from right when we moved in. But you might remember it looking like this for almost 3 years: Little baby Faye is trying to distract you from that old fireplace we revamped for less than $100 and the fact that there used to be a trampoline in our basement. (It’s now outside and the girls love that I can jump on it with them.) Now, the…

It’s Done! : The Full Kitchen Reveal

The day has come! Our kitchen renovation is finished 7 weeks after we started tearing out our old tile countertops and I can’t wait to share with you photos of what it looks like today. I’ve put all the sources at the bottom of the post for your convenience. When we moved into our home two years ago (almost exactly!) we immediately started making plans to transform the kitchen. At first, we just talked about it, and then we started drawing out plans. They changed over and over. We moved the pantry cabinet out of the dining room and rearranged what we had to tide us over. It was all a part of the process. Here’s where all that dreaming, planning and the past 7 weeks of work has landed us: There were a few major floor plan changes, including moving the laundry room so we could add a walk-in…

Before and After: A Bathroom Turned Laundry Room

I am so thrilled to be sharing some after photos with you today of our laundry room we have been renovating. This project has been one of our favorite and a very new kind of project, because it wasn’t a laundry room to begin with at all. Maybe you remember, it used to be a 4th bathroom off of our kitchen/dining room! We never used it and no guest wants to use a restroom right off of the kitchen. Fortunately, we have another bathroom in the entry to our home and we started brainstorming how to make better use of this space. That’s when the idea sparked to turn our old laundry space into a walk in pantry and this unused 4th bathroom into the laundry room. Here’s a before photo facing what was the bathroom, before we tore down the wall: I couldn’t find a photo of this area before…

Before and After: Pugmire Laundry Room

The Pugmire’s laundry room is done and today we’re here to share a bunch of photos with you! For those of you just catching up, we were approached by Wayfair last month about sponsoring our laundry room renovation. Although our own laundry room is on our list this year (and ironically got semi-started throughout this project), Chris had back surgery 3 weeks ago and I couldn’t accept the assignment–no matter how tempting–because I really needed to focus on getting him through his recovery period without him lifting anything. While our own laundry room was out, I asked if I would be able to find a worthy laundry space in need of a makeover and forward the goods to someone else. They were just excited about the idea as I was, but no one was more excited than the Pugmires, our grateful recipients. Before I even finished asking them how they…

The Guest Room is Finished!

We finished the guest room just in time for my sister, Victoria, to arrive last Saturday and we’ve been partying ever since. Maybe you’ve seen us on Instagram? Amidst the festivities, I found time to photograph the room for you that will be pulling a double shift this month with Chris’s brother’s family visiting in a couple weeks. In case you forgot where we started, here’s how the room looked when we moved in…and for the last almost year: You saw when we painted all the walls and trim and also when we upholstered the bed, but here’s how she looks all finished: Since this room is on the lower level of our home, the light doesn’t pour in all hours of the day like upstairs. But it’s also about 30 degrees cooler, so it still kind of wins right now. That being said, I hope you don’t mind I…

Hardware + The Kitchen Mini-Revamp is Done!

Wednesday night, we stayed up late and put all of our new hardware on the newly painted cabinets. A lot of our old knobs were bent or broken so we gave them to my parents since they don’t have hardware on their cabinets now and have about half as many cabinets as we have so there would be enough okay ones for them to use. For our kitchen, we chose knobs for the doors and pulls for the drawers–both from Schoolhouse Electric. Even though we’ll only be keeping these cabinets in our kitchen for maybe a year more, we plan to move them into the garage and wanted to make sure we didn’t end up with more bent hardware. These are nice and heavy! We went with the 1 1/2″ Chatham knobs which are completely classic looking. I love the backplate, too. And for the drawers, we picked the Mission…

Faye’s Nursery Reveal!

We finally finished the nursery and are excited to share a lot of photos with you today! It’s hard to believe we started working on the this room back in December and here we are five months later with a one month old. This room is a great mix of DIY projects (like the huge letter art, the fluffy ottoman, and amping up an Ikea Tarva dresser), a couple splurge pieces, and some repurposed pieces, too (our photo ledges from our last house are now used for lots of children’s books and we even painted Greta’s old crib)! When I put together the mood board for this room, I really wanted the finished space to be charming and sophisticated and I think it is just that. It’s a place I enjoy being in, but charming enough for our little girl, too. We’ve posted about the whole process along the way,…

Faux Wood Tile: The After Photos!

We’re so excited to share with you our finished floors today! Replacing almost all of the flooring on our main floor (we opted out of doing our master bath since we’ll be tackling a full renovation in there next year) was daunting beforehand, a lot of work during, but now we’re on the other side of it–6 weeks and 1500 square feet later–we couldn’t be happier we dove in and took the project by the horns. Upon moving into our house 6 months ago, the main level flooring was split between large orange-brown square tiles and dirty carpet. At first we were set on tearing it all up and laying hardwood floors, but ultimately we went with faux wood tile (Nordic Brown from The Tile Shop, specifically) for a host of reasons we outlined in this post, but most of all for durability’s sake.  Yesterday, as a friend’s little boy…

Half Bath: Afters!

We’re calling this bathroom done! … For now.  We still need to replace the faucet and eventually the tile floors, but those things will come.  You can see lots of befores in this post, but here’s a before and after side by side (and lots of photos following with sources at the end): The lines of the mirror I fell in love with.  This thing is heavy with a metal frame that adds a nice industrial touch to a more feminine piece. In the reflection, you can see how well it ties in with the fixture, but also the art on the opposite wall. Things were feeling a little serious and fancy in here and we aren’t those people.  We aren’t serious. We aren’t fancy and art is a really good way to inject personality and even humor into a room.  So, while we definitely like nice things (all these…
