5 BIG, Area Rugs for Cheap (And the one we chose for the Living Room!)

Lately, I’ve been talking (mostly on the podcast, I think) about changing up our living room rug. The truth is, I still love the big, blue beauty after 3 years, but I just feel the need for a change.  Something lighter? More neutral? After adding the planked accent wall, it has felt darker and heavier than I want for the main area of our home. Chris was on board for the change, but I’ve been hesitating because I don’t want to spend $$$ on a 10×14 rug–and I was convinced they were all so. much. money. Our current rug, the Indigo Baxter rug from Crate & Barrel, was $1500 and worth every penny. It’s plush and soft and after all these years, it’s still in phenomenal shape. Now, all the 10×14 rugs I was drawn to (including the one, I really really wanted) were closer to the $3000 range–which was just too much for us with two…

5 Tips for Keeping Area Rugs EXACTLY Where You Want Them.

A few months ago, we layered a really gorgeous vintage rug (from here) on top of our FLOR tiles in our entry. While we loved the character it added, and the extra layer of dirt camouflage, we struggled with it constantly bunching and moving around on top of the FLOR carpet squares. Often resulting in a look more like this: I ended up rolling it up for our big Halloween party so it didn’t become a hazard, but I was determined to keep it in place without excessive straightening every afternoon. Whether you’re layering area rugs, or putting an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, or just laying an area rug over hard flooring, here are the top 5 tips and methods for keeping them exactly where you want them. 1. Rug pad The most obvious is a rug pad. We have them under every area rug in our home to help them last longer…

Really Good Persian and Oriental-Inspired Rugs that AREN’T One-of-A-Kind

Oriental and Persian rugs are big right now, but the truth is, they’ll always be in. They’ve been around for several hundreds of years and they’ll be around that many more. They work across all styles–modern, traditional, farmhouse, bohemian, industrial–and add a great deal of interest, pattern, warmth and charm to a room. We have a few in our home from eBay, Etsy, eSaleRugs, and The Vintage Rug Shop in our home that I love to pieces, but it’s always a little disheartening to tell our readers, “Sorry! It’s a one-of-a kind” when they ask where they can get the same eye-candy under foot. I know that if you hunt long enough and search high and low with a little bit of patience, you will be able to find one in your price range and size you need (Persian rugs generally come in very unstandard sizes). But, prepared to spend more for the real thing….

All Of Our Rug Sources

I spend a lot of time answering source questions, especially “Where did you get that rug!?”, so I thought I’d compile a post with direct links to where we got each and every rug (this is the kind of post that will be updated over time). The rug in our living room is the 10×14 Baxter Indigo rug from Crate and Barrel. It’s definitely the most expensive rug in our house (we paid $1500 after applying a coupon we purchased on eBay that covered 15%, or taxes and shipping). We rolled it out in April 2014 and it still looks brand new. It’s soft and thick and has good variance and color to it–like the best pair of blue jeans. The shaggy number in our bedroom is the 9×12 Steven Alan Ombre Speckled Shag Wool Rug from West Elm purchased in June 2015. It’s moroccan inspired, extremely soft and a warm, cushy welcome…

Top Rug Picks for the Bedroom

I feel like I am bobbing my head trying to stay afloat over here. I’ve taken on a lot of side projects and assignments (and in the meantime, feel like I really found my calling in life!). It’s an exciting and a little bit stressful time in my life, but I always feel at home when I am at my computer blogging. Late at night, for the past several weeks, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect rug for our bedroom and constantly sending Chris links to which he replies “eh” for no or “I dig it” for keep it on the short list. Here’s the short list of six that we’re loving: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 If you remember, here’s the bed we decided on (I’ll show you it in our room later this week). I actually ordered one of these…

Cowhide in the Reading Room. Whoop!

I opened my computer yesterday for the first time in two weeks. It was a painful experience, but regardless of the amount of unanswered emails in my inbox, the break was absolutely worth it. We flew our little family to Florida and it was the best (okay, maybe our first official) family vacation ever! We stayed with family that we miss like crazy. We went to Disney World and watched the girls eyes light up for hours on end. We went to the beach. We went swimming. We stayed up late talking and eating. It was all so therapeutic. Now we are back and shooting all the cookbooks (eee!!) and the hours are a little whacky–taste testing food at 11:30pm is not always glamorous–but I didn’t want another day to go by without checking in here; it’s been too long! Before we left on vacation, as in the day before…

Flor’d

We got a new big entry rug and Charly has a new favorite spot. The runner we got for this space a couple months ago is a perfect fit for the laundry room, so we set our sites on something bigger. Ideally, we were looking for something in the 5×14 range. So, that’s nuts. I looked into a custom-sized sisal which ended up being so much more than I wanted to spend for not the exact look I wanted. I also spent some time on ebay where they have so many beautiful, large vintage rugs that are so perfect and then also $2000. Not perfect. I am so, so glad we landed on Flor tiles, which you knew if you saw the mood board.  We got the exact size we needed and this Suit Yourself design (the color is Linen) is a part of their Better Than Sisal category–great for high traffic area, cool design, soft under feet (and…

Big, New, and Blue in the Living Room

Earlier this week, the new area rug for our living room arrived. You can read more about our decision making process here, but ultimately we went with the 10×14 Baxter area rug from Crate and Barrel in Indigo. And, whew, it has made a really big difference. Here’s how things were looking right before we started renovating the floors a couple months ago: And here’s our (still very much in-progress) living room today: I can only describe it as suddenly feeling alive and energized! It feels so much more like us, too. Going from an 8×10 to a 10×14 made the biggest difference, but also opting for a bold neutral color (like a good pair of blue jeans, I say) helped pave the way for us to inject more color into the room. Any color we want. Which could be why I finally broke out our Pendleton blanket that was gifted to us…

Measuring For A New Area Rug

If you caught yesterday’s post, you already know we’re wrapping up the floors this week and moving all of our furniture back upstairs on Saturday and we can barely wait! The floors are looking beautiful and are a great launching pad for a lot of the other improvements we want to make in the house eventually. Those will come. After the floors, we’ll likely take a little break from large-scale projects for a couple months (painting the cabinets can wait!) and focus on finally settling into our home and freshen the decor, hang art, tackle accessories like new pillows and curtains–all things that will better establish this house we’ve lived in for 6 months, feel like home. First on our agenda was a new area rug for the living room in the great room area. We plopped down our 8×10 jute rug we bought in for last home’s living room…
