There are some things in your home that require special treatment. They need specific tools in order to be altered, cleaners to come clean, and professional services to function. But there are other things in the home we tend to overthink, when a simple approach is best. I shared how we quickly clean our globe lights in the kitchen on insta-stories a few months ago, but since those disappear and we still get questions all the time. Here’s the quick way we keep them spotless.

How to Clean Glass Globe Lights

As the below picture shows you, they aren’t always squeaky clean. Ours is as high-functioning of a kitchen as you’ll find in a home, and part of what this means is grease in the air. It’s amazing how much grease flies through the air of a kitchen, landing on any surface that will take it. Then naturally occurring dust makes its way and settles in, embedded into the grease so it doesn’t simply just wipe away. Eventually, the glass gets foggy and gross:

Some harsh detergents or abrasive cleaning pads can have a negative impact on the finish of the glass, causing it to appear more and more cloudy over time, when in actuality the glass itself has gathered thousands of tiny scratches. To prevent this, we suggest using a small drop of natural dish soap, and the least-abrasive scrubber available – your hand.

We’ve used Mrs. Meyer’s hand soaps and lotion for a long time, but have recently been ordering this dish soap and some other of their products from Grove Collaborative. Grove Collaborative is a scheduled delivery service that offers eco-friendly and nontoxic products for your home. Everything from cleaning to personal care (I love this chapstick!) and other common household items (this Bee’s Wrap has been life-changing for storing Chris’s homemade bread).

Once you have the globe soaped up and rinsed off, use a soft, large dish towel to dry. You want something large enough that you can hold the top with one hand and dry off the inside with the other, both hands being behind a towel and not touching the glass directly. I used these kitchen towels from Grove and they’re perfect.

The natural dish soap removes the grease easily, without harming the finish or scratching the glass.

I’m sure you’ve used Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products before, but even if you haven’t, Grove Collaborative is giving away a set of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning products (and their bubble up dish brush) TO ALL OF OUR READERS who sign up and spend $20 or more on their first order. The set includes Mrs. Meyers dish soap, hand soap, and multi-surface cleaner, all in the scent of your choice–so many options!

Any products purchased from Grove Collaborative can be set on a custom delivery schedule. Receive products for your home every 1-6 months, depending on what your needs are. It’s especially great for people like us, who live in smaller towns with less access to stores that carry these products, but it’s convenient for anyone and a great deal. To get your free Mrs. Meyers, simply use this link to start shopping and spend $20 or more in your first order (that bee’s wrap and chapstick I mentioned would get you there!).

Already use Grove’s service? You can still Click here to receive a free Walnut Scrubber Sponge on your next order.

I have 2 medium-large glass bottleneck lamps in my bedroom. I cannot fit my hand inside to clean. Is there a tool that will do this, but not sure if there us one, it will be useful in getting at the foggy film all around inside. Any help is appreciated. Thank you~~ Priscilla Herd

  2. Michelle says:

We have almost the exact same globe lights but aren’t able to reach our hands inside the globes to dry them. Any tips? Thanks a bunch!

  3. Toni says:

Hi Guys! I love your kitchen pendants and I’m thinking of getting them for my kitchen too. I like the look of the clear glass globes but worry the light will be too harsh in our eyes while we cook and socialize around the island. Is that ever an issue for you guys? Do you ever wish you would’ve gotten the opal shade to soften the light?

  4. Kristin B. says:

THANK YOU! I live in Queens, NY and walk almost everywhere. I have been putting off going to the store to get the essentials, as it requires walking there and then lugging it all back. No fun! Plus I’ve been spending every daylight hour working on our house, so again, no time to do the daily basics that NEED to get done. I’m giving Grove a try and hope it works out as smoothly as it seems.

Also, I just listened to your podcast from a few weeks back where Chris mentions baking bread in a dutch oven… mind BLOWN. Someday, hopefully not another 2 years from now, when we finally have an oven hooked up again, I will bake bread. It will be baked in a dutch oven.

    P.S. CONGRATS!!!

Love the picture of Chris re-hanging the clean globe. It shows a nice before and after cleaning comparison with the other globe. I’ve never heard of Grove Collaborative, but am looking forward to checking it out. Thank you for the recommendation!

  6. Libby says:

Hi Chris and Julia! does TO ALL OUR READERS mean even overseas readers? *fingers crossed*

  7. Shelley says:

I never heard of Grove Collaborative but it sounds like it’s right up my alley. I was already excited to check them out but then you added the free Mrs. Meyers set…love their products and the awesome scents! Thank you!

  8. Jackie Campbell says:

This isn’t exactly related to cleaning but I am about to move into a home that is new construction and I’m wondering if cabinet shelf paper is necessary. I’ve never been a fan of the rubbery mesh mats as they get bunched up and are impossible to keep straight. Also for taller cabinets I find myself sliding cups and bowls to the back and those pad do not allow for that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Chris and Julia! Long time follower (and podcast listener), first time poster! I actually read your ENTIRE blog from start until recent last summer when I had a baby who wouldn’t sleep and was a crazy nurser. It was SO fun to watch your style transform over time! This was a super helpful, sponsored post! Thank you! I’m actually wanting to order the exact pendants for my kitchen island and sink area, but am wondering a few things on the pendants…1) What color brass is on the pendants? Lacquered? Un-lacquered? 2) What made you pick the corded vs. the rod pendants? I tried reading your archives about your kitchen reveal, but couldn’t find any of these *uber important* details :) THANK YOU! :)

    • Julia says:

Hi Catie! The brass on the pendants is unlacquered and we went with the corded because I just wanted the brass to be a small detail instead of the whole rod. Hope that helps and thanks so much for being such a loyal reader. :)

      • Catie richert says:

Thank you for the info! Also, my heart went a-flutter knowing you responded to me! I’m a little starry-eyed. ;-) thanks for being responsive and caring to your readers!!

  10. Hailey says:

This is a such a great sponsored post! We’re remodeling our kitchen this summer and using 3 glass pendants above our island, I’ll remember this simple cleaning tip for the future.

Also, just ordered through Grove Collaborative and saved almost $40 on an order that cost $20. So awesome!

  11. Rene says:

I submitted an order but it’s taking awhile to go through…anyone else having this issue?

  12. Jenna says:

This is a random question, but where did you get that cute dish brush/holder shown in the last photo?

  13. Mary says:

I really appreciate these sponsored posts every once and a while. It’s fun to try new products especially when there is an incentive like free stuff!

  14. Cynthia Jenkins says:

I love the seasonal Apple Cider scent out right now! Oh, and rhubarb, yum!!

  15. Brenda Kliethermes says:

There isn’t a link to the Bee’s Wrap in the post. What size do you usually use? My husband bakes a lot of bread (he even has an oven specifically for bread in our basement) so this might be something he would use.
