It’s time for another update on our One Room Challenge, where we’re making over our nursery for our 3rd little girl due this summer. Week 4! How did we get here?! So far, we have added loads of pretty trim in week 2 and dreamy wallpaper in week 3. And if you missed the before, head to week 1. This week, we rolled out a new rug and dresser for the space–the foundation pieces if you will, that needed to be less baby/nursery specific and more could-transition-elsewhere-after those precious years.

This rug, the Marin from Rejuvenation, was definitely the choice that took the longest of any decision in this room. After we nailed down our wallpaper choice, I looked at no less that 750 rugs for the room. Probably a lot more, actually. I looked at vintage rugs for days. I pinned several of them (see them on this Pinterest board, if you’d like). I put a couple in an online cart. I measured the room over and over to see if I could sneak all the different variety of sizes vintage rugs come in into the room. Because, the downside with vintage rugs is, although they are beautiful, they don’t come in standard sizes. And if you find one you really like, it may not work with the size of your room. We needed an 8×10. In fact, one of my biggest annoyances of our last nursery was when I got a 5×8 rug for this same room and it was way too small and then we lived with it for 3 years. Blerg.

After searching and searching, I decided to leave my vintage rug search and start looking at some of our other favorite rug sources (we have and love this Indigo rug from Crate and Barrel, a shaggy rug from West Elm in our bedroom, a budget moroccan rug from Wayfair and this flatweave from Rejuvenation in the playroom).

When I saw the Marin Hand Knotted Rug, I knew it was the rug. The same feeling you have when you know that’s your child’s name–it was it! It has a beautiful neutral background that is very forgiving and a gorgeous varied blue striated pattern that feels vintage, with a hint of femininity (for our little girl) and it set the tone for the entire color scheme for the room–let’s do blues!

This rug definitely falls into the heirloom category as far as quality and price go. It’s so, so soft and thick, but not shaggy so that it will get matted. It’s versatile and can easily bounce from bedroom to living room to office–and we couldn’t be more giddy to have it living in the nursery.

Before the room ran away from us to a no contrast, non-moody house, I knew we needed to inject some drama in here. Enter the dresser/changing table.

It’s called the Wrightwood “River Blue” Wide Changing Table, but it looked more brownish online. Luckily, Land of Nod offers free samples, so I ordered a sample of the wood and sure enough, it was a beautiful warm neutral navy stained wood. It comes with a separate changing table attachment that is removable so we can use the dresser anywhere after we’re out of that stage of life.

And to be honest, as soon as it got here, I wanted to put it in the entry–it’s stunning! But it also adds a richness this room was missing thus far.

Not to mention, the color plays really well with the new rug. There was one funny hurdle in getting it to our house. We live in a remote part of the country–in Idaho. And apparently Land of Nod only delivers furniture to our area every two months! How funny is that? Normally it wouldn’t be a huge deal since our baby isn’t due until the summer, but their next delivery wasn’t until after the One Room Challenge was over. Fortunately, Chris loved the dresser as much as I did and suggested we try sending it to his brother’s house 4 hours away in Utah and he would go pick it up. That’s just what he did last weekend and I’m so grateful it all worked out.

Now that all the big foundation pieces are in place, we’re ready to start bringing in the smaller accessories. I’m putting the final touches on the “art” for the room and can’t wait to share that with you next week!

Eager to see how everyone else is doing in week 4?–Me too! Check out our fellow ORC participants below!

What do you think?

the rug and dresser are so gorgeous! it’s looking so good!

  2. Jennifer says:

Okay, I’m loving that you looked at at least 750 rugs! Lol! I thought I was the only one! The one you chose is absolutely perfect. It looks amazing with the wallpaper. And also, I had to take a moment with your changing table…..it is everything! Can’t wait to see more!!!

  3. Anne says:

I need to know the shoes you’re wearing. And I love your blog.

  4. Anne says:

I need to know what shoes you are wearing.

  5. Danielle says:

Love the dresser! Can’t wait to see the low end versions you recommend!

  6. Caeli says:

Soooo…for any of us who would like to create the look of that dresser on our own…would you be willing to tell us what paint color is closest to it? I’m looking at Benjamin Moore Witching Hour or Deep Space?? If you can…it would be great. Thanks either way!

  7. lu says:

The beginnings of a beautiful room… fit for a princess! Have you decided on the name?

  8. Nicole says:

You’re making me doubt my decision on rug size for our nursery. I’m thinking of getting a 6×9 for our room or maybe even a 7×9 if I can find it. We have a similarly sized room but it’s carpeted and we have the issue of not wanting the door to get hung up on the rug. Wish we had your beautiful faux wood tile floors! Do you have any advice for rugs over carpet? I love the flat weave ones from Urban Outfitters (and the price is right!) but I’m not sure if I’ll just be constantly tripping on them? Thanks!

  9. Katie says:

Beautiful room…but also super cute shoes…where are THOSE from?!

  10. Annie says:

Gosh this room is a dream. I would happily call it my bedroom! Side note, I randomly read the comments on today’s post and jeeeez people can be harsh! I hope y’all feel the love from other readers. I really appreciate you sharing your ideas/life with all of us even when it comes with (pointless and rude) criticisms. You’ve always inspired me and I’m excited to “meet” your new sweet baby girl.

  11. Amanda says:

This rug is beautiful! I think adding a rug to a room makes it feel so much more finished and cozy (like curtains!) but I struggle with a. Measuring for the correct size & b. Buying the right rug. How do you know? Our living room walls are a soft gray blue, we have navy curtains and I think this rug would be beautiful in it but, would it be too matchy-matchy? I plan to add some rose gold and pink/neautral accents (ie: pillows) to soften all the blues.

    • Julia says:

I think that sounds amazing! As for size, we got it wrong three years ago when picking a rug for this room because we thought–9×12 room, we COULDN’T need bigger than a 5×8 rug. But the truth of it is, it has SO much more to do with the furniture in the room rather than the size of the room. How wide is the crib (or sofa in your case). If it’s 5′ wide, that you are probably going to need something larger than a 5×8 rug depending on the orientation. Of if your couch is 8′ wide, you will need a wider rug or to orient the rug in such a way that the 10′ length is parallel to the couch. A good rule of thumb is at very least, the front legs of all furniture is on the rug and there is at least 6″ of rug on each side of a sofa.

  12. Amanda says:

That dresser adds just the right amount of drama. Can’t wait to see more!

  13. Monica says:

I love how all these pieces are so usable for other areas of your home too! While expensive, they are classical pieces that will be so versatile.

  14. Carrie Underwood says:

Beautiful! Could you tell me where the light fixture is from?

  15. Caitlin says:

Love the dresser and the rug but I am also smitten with the light fixture. Where is it from? I didn’t see it mentioned in last week ORC post either.

  16. Amy says:

Wow! Those pieces are extremely spendy for a third child’s bedroom. They are beautiful, but way out of budget for most normal people with three kids.

    • Julia says:

Just like last One Room Challenge, we’ll have a high/low version of the room after we’re all done so look for that! Already gathering lots of great budget look a likes

  17. that changing table /dresser is a showstopper!

  18. oh that change table is spectacular!! Love the whole room can easily be a super stylish room for kid or adult! I would love my bedroom to look just like that!

  19. The rug is stunning! I can see why you’re thrilled with it. How wonderful that he drove to Utah to snag the dresser. Smart thinking! Can’t wait to see it all come together. xo

  20. Every week I fall in love with this room a bit more. That dresser/changing table is amazing. I love how it does bring a bit more of a moodly flair to the space and the amount of storage is to die for!

  21. Morgan says:

Love the blues that you are bringing into the space! I really love that you aren’t afraid to do blue for a girl!

I am also linking up with the ORC and doing my walk in closet! Check it out if you are interested: http://www.charlestoncrafted.com/2017/04/26/orc-build-custom-wooden-closet-system/

  22. kate says:

It’s beautiful so far, but I wish you were more transparent about the items you got for free in your post. You say the rug costs a ton and is an investment piece, but you didn’t actually pay for it. It’s totally fine that you didn’t and I understand the business behind blogging. As a reader I don’t care if you got it for free, as long as you are honest about it throughout the entire post, and not just in a snippet at the end. It feels a little sneaky.

    • Giulia says:

But it’s the One Room Challenge – items are sponsored for all of the main participants and their partners and often other brands sponsor things as well for the eyes on product. I don’t think she was sneaky as the Challenge in itself is a sponsor event.

    • Jaime E says:

      Totally agree. Very well said!

    • Julia says:

Totally get what you’re saying. We pick out the items for the room regardless of what is going to be sent to us, and often times prior to knowing a company WILL. (We have even had companies offer to refund us for a purchase we made for our home because they are so grateful for the exposure!) So, I guess in my mind, the rug IS an investment piece because the average homeowner wouldn’t have it sent to them, you know? Just because we maybe didn’t pay in our own dollars, does that make the rug not an investment piece or inexpensive? I don’t think so.

      • KP says:

Perhaps take a read through some other blogs and see how they do it. Transparency is huge and I think readers love it when someone comes right out and says “company A offered to send us X Y and Z although we would have spent our own money on it” or whatever. Emily Henderson does it right, I’m sure you’ve read her blog. I get what you say above about the average homeowner wouldn’t have it sent to them, it’s true, but you’re not the average homeowner so why pretend?

  23. Arli says:

Everything in this room is soooo beautiful and tasteful. If I could fit into a crib, I’d move right in!

  24. Love it when a plan falls together! That rug + dresser is perfection.

  25. Corine says:

‘Foundation pieces’ I love that. These could easily be used in other spaces once they outgrow the nursery. They are so well made and beautiful! I am LOVING how the rug, dresser and wall paper play off each other. The room looks so dreamy!

  26. Susie says:

Isn’t it just so nice to get a rug that actually fits in your space?! Looks great and I’m glad you splurged on this rug after waiting years for one that really fits the space.

  27. Emily says:

REALLY beautiful! Love the blue tones.

  28. Ashley says:

Wow. $1800 rug for a nursery?! That’s kinda crazy to me.

  29. Kelly says:

I really like this rug – what’s the pillage factor on it?

  30. The dresser and rug couldn’t be more perfect together…absolutely beauitful!!!!!

  31. Julie says:

Oooooh, that dresser is gorgeous!! Absolutely love all of your selections so far, the room is looking amazing!
