What do you think?

  1. Sarah says:

Finally getting around to this episode of the podcast, and I have some strong opinions about shoes in the house. I grew up wearing shoes inside, and I never remember being asked or expected to take my shoes off at someone else’s house. I’m from Georgia, and just don’t know anybody who does this.

In fact, I had a party a few weeks ago (50 or so late 20’s-30’s), and two guys took their shoes off. Nobody else had their shoes off and it was SO offensive to me. I know I should not take offense to this, but both were not wearing socks and we could all smell their feet. However, I didn’t feel like there was a way to ask them to put their shoes back on without being rude.

I don’t even not wear shoes in my own house– I have rubber-bottomed slippers that I wear all the time.

  2. Martichou says:

I grew up wearing shoes in the house but having lived in Africa where shoes get so dusty/muddy all the time and now living in Norway where it is not acceptable to wear shoes inside we just became a “ho shoes” household. I don’t feel strongly about it but just grew accustomed! I also believe that having floor heating is the reason we feel so comfortable without shoes in our current house…
Anyway, I saw this doormat on apartment therapy and made me come back here to comment!

  3. Jillian H says:

I felt so inspired by the podcast advice about shoes because I do NOT like shoes in the house because of our two little ones! We recently had a party for both boys’ birthdays (on a rainy day!) and I added a very obvious shoe shelf by the door with a pair of my shoes already on it to give a little “hint, hint.” At the end of the party? Not ONE pair of shoes had joined my shoe example and my husband cleaned up LOTS of muddy footprints off our new rug :( I guess next time I will have to be more vocal about our wishes and not expect visitors to pick up on a hint! Thanks for the tips!

  4. Catherine Olney says:

My daughter has a sign that hangs in her entrance way….
“Little hands and feet touch these floors,
    please remove your shoes.”
Anyway the bottom of the shoes that have been walking around the city streets and who knows …. leave them at the door. If you are Carrie, maybe put them in your purse! :))
My Vote is for you Dad!!

  5. Jennette says:

I listened to this episode twice, and I went back and listed to episode 01 again. Soo good! Thank you! I just can’t get enough of undertones and I definitely had the misconception that I had to choose one white paint for my whole house. Have you read Design sponge’s post on white paint? It’s in their “little black book of…” Series and it lists her favorite white paints and what their undertones are.

  6. Flora says:

Oh man – I wonder if the shoes in the house is a regional/national thing? I’m Canadian, and grew up in Vancouver BC and now live in Calgary AB. I’ve never worn shoes in the house (my own or other people’s homes), it just isn’t done! Growing up, I thought it was curious that TV characters wore shoes indoors, until I realized that might be the norm in other areas.

I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your podcast! I am a late joiner – I’m not a huge podcast listener and wasn’t sure how the blog (which is so visual) would translate to audio, but I love it :)

  7. Ginger says:

Loved the white paint conversation. I am currently wanting to paint a couple smaller rooms in our house white but not sure what to do about the trim. Our trim/doors throughout the whole house is the same color- SW Alabaster. I was just going to paint the rooms Alabaster too but now your podcast has got me thinking I need to test different whites out. But if I paint the walls a different white paint color do I need to paint the trim the same color or is it ok to have different white on the walls than what is on the trim??

  8. Katie Peterson says:

Oh my goodness! We need more “never mind “. I listened to it over and over with my daughters on the way Home from choir rehearsal last night. Any chance you and your sisters can reunite for a full version of the hit single? You have a very pretty voice and Preston is very talented. Thank you for that!

  9. Gillian says:

Shoes on in the house is gross. And it’s a massive sign of disrespect to wear outdoor shoes in someone’s house.
” Oh but they are clean ”
Really? You’re sure You didn’t step in fertilizer or dog pee?
If you have an issue and need to wear shoes, ‘ have an indoor pair of shoes’
That you only wear indoors ( obviously) and take to people’s houses to wear there’s. Indoors.

  10. Brittany says:

It’s totally not rude to ask your guests, “Hey do you mind taking your shoes off?” This would express your interest and give someone the chance to explain if they had a medical reason to wear them. When it comes down to it, they are guests in your home. Why shouldn’t you be able to ask them?

  11. Ashley says:

Oh my gosh- your episode today stirred up the most ridiculous memory- I went to a house party in college and the people who lived there asked that we take out shoes off for some reason. I, like Carrie, was like “but they’re part of my outfit!” but took them off anyway (mine were like $20 shoes). Anyway MY SHOES WERE STOLEN! I had to go home barefoot- it was so weird. Who steals shoes?!

  12. Kelly B says:

Okay shoes in the house! Major dilemma I hope you guys would have hit.

Backstory. I have plantar faciaitis and recurring stress fractures in my feet. I am married and have three little kids. Our house would be a no shoes house, but I have to wear supportive shoes almost all the time. So we always ask our kids to take off their shoes, and my husband loves to be comfy and shoeless. When people come over here, they usually ask if they need to remove shoes. And we just tell them to do what they want!

But the kicker is, what do I do when I go somewhere else? I usually IGNORE the shoe basket and just wear my shoes inside someone else’s house. If I feel like I am getting the side eye, I’ll say plantar faciaitis. But I have been in homes where I feel like it’s NOT okay to wear my shoes. And then I feel awkward and uncomfortable. Sometimes I’ll even just remove my shoes even if I know it will hurt my feet, just to avoid that awkwardness.

    • Julia says:

I have a friend that has Plantar Faciaitis and it’s partially why I’m more sensitive to the whole shoes in the house. I, myself, have house shoes that I only wear inside because when I’m up and walking around our home, with our wood tile floors–it can be hard on my back for long periods of time.

  13. Phoua says:

Hey Julia, Chris, & Preston! I’m loving the podcast so far–you guys are amazing! You mentioned that your contractor had to go to the ER (I’m so glad he’s okay!!), but I’m curious. In the case of work related injuries on your project(s), who foots the medical bills? Do you guys only use contractors who have their own insurance or how does that all work? Just wanted to know in the event I do my own home reno some day!

    • Julia says:

We offered to pay for his medical expenses (although he has insurance) because he wouldn’t go to the ER and we felt he really needed to and we also felt kind of responsible. I think it’s always a good idea to make sure whomever you hire is licensed and insured though.

  14. Joanna says:

Loved the white paint advice. Great stuff.

  15. Heidi says:

    Hi Julia,
Can you give us an update on your Interior Define couch and if you would still recommend it?
    Thanks,
    heidi

    • Julia says:

I’m working on a big update post on a few things for everyone, but I’ll say it’s amazing! It still looks brand new and we love lounging on it all the time.

  16. Joanna says:

Quick question because I am parinoid and it was brought up in your podcast is…what low level Carbon monoxide detector do you use to know the exact levels? I’ve been wanting to get one but not sure if you have one you recommend! Thanks!
