Ep 16: I am on a drug, it's called paint sheen

Listen to the latest episodes on: iTunes, GooglePlayStitcher.

Title: Ep 16: I Am On A Drug, It’s Called Paint Sheen
Hot Topic: Fixer Upper/AirBNB
Show Notes: It’s common for everyone to ask about paint colors, but much less frequently do people ask about the sheen. But to get the effect you want in your space, choosing the right sheen can’t be overlooked.

In this episode, Julia and Chris give great advice on how to decide which paint sheen will look best for the space you’re painting. They discuss why you’d choose flat over satin (and vice versa) and what the role of primer is in the process.

Your discussion on Fixer Upper was so interesting!! It didn’t come up in your discussion but I read that these people aren’t living in their Fixer because so many tourists are driving around and sightseeing these homes. There are some instances where people are actually knocking on the door asking for a tour. That would scare me. I wouldn’t want to live there either!

Side note: I love your blog, I listen to every podcast (somehow I missed this one??!!), and I’m a huge fan! Kept it up, you guys are awesome!

I know I’m late to the game, but I’ve been catching up on all your podcasts! We just bought a lake house which is a total fixer upper and so many episodes are so helpful. Thank you. I learned a lot from this episode but was wondering something. You say no one asks about sheen when asking about paint color, but you also don’t include it in the shop your home section on your blog. Any way you can update this to make it easier to find both color and sheen used in your home?! I’d be so grateful.

  3. Oksana says:

Now we need a breakdown of your paint colors & sheens from your house???? would be much appreciated!

  4. Joanna says:

Great discussion on paint sheen. I do the classic thing of getting up to paint counter and totally space on what sheen I want. So far in our house we’ve paint the rooms with a satin finish and the trim with semi gloss. The only exception is our guest bath which I paint a semi gloss and I hate it. I made the rookie mistake of not sanding well before painting and you can see every imperfection. I went with the semi gloss originally for durability and with the idea that it was the sheen I was supposed to use in a bathroom.
One question, what type of decision making process did you use for choosing different sheens for different rooms? You talked about having matte in your master bedroom to hide the orange peel texture. What made you decide to you a satin in your living area?

    • Julia says:

We used eggshell in our large common areas like the great room and the family room downstairs, because the sheen still isn’t super shiny but it provides a bit more scrub ability.
