You want to know the oldest furnishing we own? Well, not theĀ oldestĀ because we have some vintage rugs, our nightstands are vintage, and we cherish some passed down pieces, like our piano, from our ancestors! But! The thing we that we’ve owned together the longest is our mattress. We got it for our wedding from my parents when we got married 7+ years ago. It has a pillow top and feels like sleeping on a cloud. Which was, well, heavenlyĀ for me but ever since Chris started having back trouble and his subsequent back surgery last year, it has been hard for him to get comfortable and wake up pain-free.
And then there’s the embarrassing fact that over the past 7 years, it has developed bucket seats.
Clear indentions where Chris and I sleep at night. As much as we love each other, Chris has expressed that even the touch of my toe on him during the night basically engulfs him in flames–he gets SO HOT! Haha! So we stick to our sides and after all these years, it’s pretty apparent exactly where that is.
The other bad thing about a pillow-top that we’ve come to understand is you can’t really rotate it. Sure, Chris and I can rotate sides, but the pillow top dictates the top and I think that factored into the ultimate wearing of the mattress to the point where we felt like, maybe it’s time to get a new one.
Whenever we share photos of our bedroom, a few readers have asked, “Do you like your mattress?!” To which, I’ve responded recently (in the past 6 months) “Oh, it’s okay. We’re casually researching new options.” And then someone always ALWAYS chimes in “Check out Tuft & Needle!”
So we did. The first thing we noticed is it had over 3000 nearly 5 star reviews on Amazon. (That I spent way too much time reading.) I also liked the fact that it isn’t memory foam (which sleeps hot–we don’t need more of that around here) or latex and it actually works in three ways to draw heat from your body and disperse it OUT of the mattress. Could this mean more cuddling? Ā It’s made 100% in the US and the last thing that ultimately sold us was so many reviewers saying “It’s not firm. It’s supportive.” For us, that’s the winning ticket. I slept well on our pillow-top mattress, so I was worried about going into the extremely firm category. They do have a 100 night trial period, which helped my concerns. One day after Chris woke up especially achy, we ordered it. I remember our previous mattress was about $1000 and this one was $750 (with free shipping) for a King.
It arrived just a couple days later in a box. My mom got the biggest kick out of that. She, literally, could not believe her eyes that there was a king sized mattress in the box.
It comes vacuumed sealed and as soon as I got it in place, I cut the plastic off and it expanded to full size in less than a minute. Relaxation ensued.
It’s. Amazing. It’s supportive but soft. Very cool. And has zero bucket seats! We’re so grateful for all of you who recommended Tuft & Needle to us. Truly. Chris and I both love it so much and are both sleeping harder with less tossing and turning. The only downside? All of our sheets are extra deep to accommodate our former pillow-top, so now we’re sheet shopping. (Not really a downside. ;)
Ps. Anyone know what to do with an old mattress??

Looking into purchasing the tuft and needle, but wondering about pillows? Did you purchase new pillows? I’ve heard that people find that regular pillows don’t provide enough support for the head so it is uneven with the support the mattress gives the rest of the body.
We just use Target pillows.
As a girl that is ready to stab my boyfriend in his sleep just so he would stop moving around so much and waking me up, I was wondering if this is one of those mattresses that doesn’t transfer motion?
Our pregnant friend’s husband has seen night and day improvement after they got this mattress. He doesn’t feel her getting up and down at all in the night—a good thing? Haha
Hi Julia,
My husband and I are in the market for a new bed and mattress, after sleeping on his full-size mattress from college for over 5 years! We are deciding between the Tuft and Needle and a Casper mattress. I love that Tuft and Needle is significantly cheaper, but I wanted to see if you still love yours, almost 6 months later.
Thanks!
We love it so much! A few of our friends have since got one too and they have nothing but great things to say about it. :)
I’m strongly considering this mattress! Did you find new sheets that you guys like?
We haven’t found purchased any super nice sheets yet, just rocking some Target ones right now.
What sheets from target do you use and do they fit okay on the mattress? Love my Tuft & Needle! Just looking for sheets now ????
I like your bed frame! Where is it from?
