We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

My pinboards are filled with inspiration from textiles to paint colors to just the way a room feels. But sometimes, it’s difficult to see that beautiful room on your favorite blogs or Pinterest with high ceilings and lots of windows and implement the same ideas into your own space. Or maybe you have, and it was a fail–this recent article empathizes with you.

Our great room has already seen a lot of changes like painting the whole area and rearranging some furniture–but we’re really really just getting started. For the last 6 months, we’ve been getting to know this house of ours. Which direction it faces, where and when we get the most light. How we use each room. With our permanent floors almost in place–we feel like we finally get to start on fun stuff. A lot more painting and light fixtures and accessories. Curtains! Area rugs! I can’t wait. Especially now that we’ve torn out the pantry and island and, oh yeah, all the floors too. I remember when we first looked at this house, the vastness of this completely tiled room felt intimidating.

That’s the living room? And the pantry is in the dining space? Now it feels so ideal for us. An open space is easy to entertain in, and keep an eye on kids while in the kitchen.

I recently came across this photo and got even more excited about the potential of our great room:

Our house twin! Maybe not exactly, but close enough. Fraternal twin. Ha! The room has provided so much inspiration for us because it the layout is so similar to ours. It has me excited to add another window to the left of our patio doors. It has me thinking about chair layouts and a kitchen layout. We’ve been mulling over kitchen layouts for months and this one could really work for us. It has me considering nixing our big floor lamp to free up some vertical visual space.
Is there anything more fun than finding a house/room twin? It is my first time and I took a double take and then squealed! Have you found one for a space in your house? Keep looking, it is completely worth it.

What do you think?

Haha, your last house was my house twin. You’ve provided tons of inspiration, I just need the funds and motivated husband to help me.

    Twinsies, ftw!

  3. Kim // Yellow Brick Home says:

Wowza, that truly IS your house twin!

I have a similar great room as well! I’ve been in my home for 3 months now and I’m ready to change up the ceiling lights a bit. The kitchen area has pot lights, the dining area has a chandelier and the living room area has a ceiling fan. My biggest issue is that the ceiling fan and chandelier aren’t in alignment.

Are there any handy rules for ceiling lighting in a great room?

  5. Laura says:

We once found our literal house twin when we lived in a Queen Anne Victorian home in eastern Iowa. About 5-6 blocks away was the exact same layout, square footage, design, everything. Same stair case, same ceilings, same fireplace placement, etc. Some differences, such as paint color and porches – our house used to have a wrap-around porch, but a small fire destroyed it. This house still had the wrap around. People in our house had also closed off a small space inside (which we hated, and the next owners tore it down for us), and this house never had the walls built to close off the space. It was pretty cool to find!

Oooh love it when that happens. So helpful to really picture the space with a different layout/furniture/colours, etc. Plus… that room is gorge!!

Hope the floors are going well!

  9. Rebecca says:

Your house twin is gorgeous. Do it!!! Oh my, I can’t wait for the befores and afters.

  10. Renee says:

Now would be the time to add a conduit for electricity under the floor… could perhaps have a table lamp on an end table by your sofa.

    That inspiration photo is gorgeous!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
