Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

What can I say, yesterday was like Christmas.  Our countertops arrived–more on that tomorrow, exclamation point–and our new couch arrived.  Our “old” one, the Klippan from Ikea, we have had for about two years.  Ikea discontinued this longer model and all the slipcovers that accompanied it and we were ready to invest in a higher quality couch that could last us years and years. You can read more about our couch saga here. So, we sold that couch:
To help fund this one, the Lily sofa by Younger Furniture:
Cue the hallelujah chorus–we’re in love. The new sofa–built in the US of A, North Carolina to be exact–really helps the room feel more mature–but it’s definitely fresh and a little quirky with its legs and sloping arm rests.  The Lily, although inspired by vintage traditional furniture, has a modern interpretation that fits well into the vision we are going for around here.  It’s cool and stole our hearts with its artful tailoring.
Speaking of that tailored upholstery, there were over a hundred fabric options to choose from.   To narrow it down, we had a major swatch fest and decided we wanted something lighter to pop against our dark wall, but it also had to clean up easily so we didn’t have to protect it against every day life.  All of Younger’s fabrics are divided into three cleaning and wearability codes: S, W, and WS. “S”requires a dry cleaning solvent, “W” is to be cleaned only with water based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner and “WS”can take either.  We went with a “WS” fabric in a light taupe for a timeless look–eight four one one if you’re wondering.

The couch as a whole is soft and comfortable–two things our Klippan didn’t excel at.  It’s not as deep as our Lounge sofa in the family room, but we think it is pretty perfect for sitting around and chatting.

Now that the couch is in place, we are looking at the room with renewed vigor. We are thinking about end tables and a coffee table and even curtains to finish up this room once and for all. Also throws and pillows. With color. Exclamation point. We don’t want to cover up the fantastic lines of the couch, so I’m choosing size and amount carefully.  Stay tuned, friends.

Ps. In case you’re wondering about some typographic choices in today’s post, my number keys, and all of the symbols that go with them, aren’t working and it is throwing me for a serious loop. My parentheses. My exclamation marks. My having to spell out numbers : ….I can’t even finish a frowny face. Hopefully we can get it fixed real soon.

Hi, I’m looking at this couch, and would love to know how it’s holding up.

That couch is SO GOOD in your room! It’s perfect. I recently went from a dark grey HUGE Pottery Barn sofa to the white CB Petrie…and it’s amazing the difference it made in my room. Sometimes it takes a while, but when you find the “right” sofa, you just know. :) Yours looks amazing against the dark architectural wall!

Just wondering – what happened to the glass sculptural coffee table you picked up a few months ago? Did it end up not working?

  6. Lindsey says:

This couch is PERFECT. It really makes the couch fit in better with the elegance of everything else you’ve done in there.

And, for typing issues– I suggest copying an exclamation point from some text and then just pasting it in wherever you need it. No help for numbers, but at least you can relay excitement, yeah??

  7. Love the new sofa! It is gorgeous! And I just love the lines of it and the legs! Can’t wait to see the room some together around it! :)

  8. Kristine says:

it’s beauuuutiful! fits perfectly with that room!

  9. Aren’t sloping arms the best?! Our couch has that too, and it feels so fancy, even though it’s not – it’s just super cozy!

I loved your typing issues disclaimer. I literally LOL’ed. (But I’m not loving that you’re actually having issues – get better, keyboard!)

  10. It’s beautiful!! And absolutely perfect for your space. I adore the lines and how it pops against your dark wall. Plus, it doesn’t get much better than being made in the USA!!! :):)

  11. Karen says:

Wow… Love it! It has such sexy, elegant lines. I love mid-century modern, so it’s cool that you can buy something brand new that replicates that style.

  12. Love. That increase in height makes such a big difference. Ohhh it’s so pretty. Can’t wait to see the new counters!

  13. Love it. It’s so modern but still classic. The colour is great with the dark wall.

  14. Your new sofa is beautiful! And I looove your black wall!

  15. LOVE THAT COUCH!! The color is beautiful and it really is the perfect sitting room couch. Can’t wait to see what end tables you choose and the colors/patterns of pillows! So fun.

  16. Kristen says:

hahaha! Thank you for the explanation on the typing. I was thinking while I was reading it, why is she spelling everything out? Maybe she’s trying some fancy new writing technique. I had a high school teacher who always spoke like that. She’d say things like, “However, comma,….” Maybe you’re onto something…

  17. Great piece. I love the shape, especially the legs!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
