Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

We made it.  It’s happening. The kitchen renovation has officially kicked off and we’re starting with sharing our newest appliance (and the last one on our shopping list)–the range hood.  You see, when we did our cosmetic kitchen revamp to tide us over until we could get started on this real one, we painted our bisque range hood (gag me) white.  Obviously, we really needed a new one that wasn’t painted and that, more importantly, worked.
So while it has to work was our main objective, we also decided that getting a hood to go with our Kenmore range hanging out below would be a good idea.  After scouring our Sears Outlet with no luck, we turned to ebay to see if we could get by without paying full price (about $230) for the hood we had our eyes on.  Luckily, we did find it on ebay–new–for $150 and it arrived a few days later.
We love the sleek shape of the hood, and the fact that curves up instead of down, opens up a little more visual space underneath. It doesn’t come with bulbs for the lights–weird–just include the bulbs!  We have ordered the bulbs and other than that, we are happy with it and it was a breeze to install.
Visually, the room already looks so much better.  Unified–and a great way to get the remodel going.  That (and that pot of stew you see on the stove) made for a very happy weekend.
PS–When we got a new fridge, dishwasher and double oven

What do you think?

are the hoods standard size? we have a similar setup as you guys do and I am wondering if you can just buy one off ebay without doing specific measurements? also, do you have a microwave? i just haven’t noticed it anywhere…

  2. Dee says:

I have that same range hood! Amazing how different things look. But no bulbs for me either. Where did you order them from?

  3. This looks fantastic!
My last two kitchens didn’t have any sort of hood at all, my current one has a microwave-hood-combo which doesn’t leave us much space but I have really come to appreciate it. Except it’s really loud so I only turn it on at crucial moments. ;)

  4. Patty says:

A Chef’s kitchen! What a difference! Lemme guess…. making Stone Soup?

  5. Love the new hood! I also forced my husband to price out new appliances with me at Lowe’s on Saturday. I really want a double oven and it’s all your fault! ;)

  6. This really upgrades the whole look! Very high end. I am so excited about this kitchen reno!

  7. Your kitchen is looking better already! Love how small changes have that effect :)

  8. MKB says:

Does the fan exhaust to outside? Or does it just filter the air? Sorry, kinda clueless about these kind of appliances :)

    • This one just filters the air–but It has an exhaust/duct work option. Our kitchen just isn’t set up for that. And don’t feel bad, I didn’t even realize these were considered an appliance.

  9. Kathy says:

Wow – so nice! I’m dreaming of the day we get an actual range hood instead of the standard microwave-over-the-stove (which does NOTHING!) But I have no where else to put the microwave right now and we actually use it… Oh well, maybe in the next house!

  10. Dana says:

Such a small change makes such a difference already! I can’t wait to see the whole kitchen come together.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
