It is pumpkin carving season (!!!) and over the last few weeks–but even more so in the past week–I have been seeing all of these beautifully carved, gilded, painted, shaved pumpkins on my favorite blogs or plastered on Pinterest. Â Spoiler alert–my pumpkin is no such beauty.
Last weekend, we had some friends over for dinner and pumpkin carving. Â Apparently I was inspired by the top I was wearing and decided to go for stripes!! Â I just followed the natural grooves of my pumpkin to cut out vertical stripes that, in my head, would be incredibly awesome all lit up–something that painted pumpkins don’t do. Â You can’t stick a candle in a painted pumpkin.
7 days later–but really, really within 3 days–you couldn’t stick a candle in my pumpkin either. Pumpkin. Fail. It has almost completely collapsed.
And it is still on our front porch, which may count as another fail but it makes us laugh hysterically every day. Â Maybe in another 12 hours it will be flat enough to paint like a spider!
So maybe painted pumpkins can’t house a candle, but at least they hold up–like our two little painted pumpkins Greta and her friend, Paislee, did.
We gave them zero rules. Â So yeah. Pumpkins at our house this year? Â Nothing to pin about.

Try soaking your pumpkin in cold water overnight- the kitchen sink or bathtub works well for this, as you need to submerge it completely. Then in the morning wipe it down with some paper towels to dry it off and it should be good to last a few more days. This is the way we always made our pumpkins last longer, up to a month even. The one is probably too far gone, but your other pumpkin is probably sitll saveable
