Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

I know, I know, it’s going to be a lot more thrilling to hear Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron say those words–I couldn’t resist. You see, we have been getting by with this hand-me-down mirror from my parents since we got married 3 and a half years ago.  It’s gone from oak, to blue, to oil-rubbed bronze–but always hung in our entry way so we could check ourselves before we head out.
I have been casually keeping my eyes open for a slightly larger replacement mirror the past couple months to fill this wall better and to kick-start our “entryway” makeover.  Monday was my lucky day. While in the as-is section at Ikea with my sister, I came across this large mirror for $56, instead of $80 or 30% off.  I gave Chris a call to see what he thought and he said,”Get it!”

Woot.  A quick assessment of the mirror, we learned the only thing wrong with it was a teeny dent in the top of the frame that you wouldn’t even see once we got it hung.
With two heavy duty anchors in hand, last night, we took down our old mirror (we’ll probably re-use it somewhere else in the house) and hung the new one.
It’s pretty hard to gage from photos how big it is (36″x51″) or how much it adds to the space, but trust me when I say, it’s a nice improvement.
The silver-colored frame is a lot less heavy than the darker one we had there before, and the much larger rectangular mirror adds a lot more visual square footage, too.  I’m crazy about the classic line detailing in the frame:
So, I guess this means our entryway makeover has been kick-started.  We plan to add a little shelving to catch keys and maybe house a plant and also some proper shoe storage.  It’s embarrassing how many shoes we can fit on that carpet square.
And since no one can talk about mirrors, without talking about Snow White these days, and let’s face it, I like to bring things full circle–which movie are you most excited to see? The romantic comedy Mirror, Mirror or the action-packed Snow White and The Huntsman? Gah!  It’s a toss up for us.

What do you think?

  1. Ashlee Peterson says:

Mirror Mirror was adorable! Not really excited about the Huntsman since Kristin Stewart is in it….I wish they had gone with someone else. Although that guy that plays Thor is pretty enough to look at that he might make up for the poor acting on her part ;)

BTW I LOVE that mirror. I love mirrors in general. I’ve been looking for one of those huge leaning ones that I can actually afford. Haven’t found one yet but I have faith!

  2. Beautiful mirror! I’m finally making the 2 hour voyage to Ikea this weekend and I’m so excited to pick up some things for the house! And despite Kristin Stewart I think we’re most looking forward to Snow White and the Huntsman…

  3. That sounds so nice, Callie! We’ll see where we end up. Lots of ideas, nothing definite yet.

  4. Julia Robert’s accent changes 5x WITHIN the trailer! Yikes…
I love everything big and bold! Great mirror!

  5. ooooo, i love!! it reminds me of the one at restoration hardware that i am lusting over that costs, oh a gazillion dollars. the height really adds something to the space! love it :)

  6. Stephy says:

They have ones that size at Home Depot for 29.99 if you want another one! Come in silver and black. We got both!

  7. I did look there and they do have a great selection, but they weren’t quite as large. Still a great price for the size, though!

  8. Chris Marcum says:

I love how you said “It’s a toss up for us.” I have almost zero desire to see either one. But I’ll go see both, as long as I get some snuggles.

  9. Amanda @ Our Humble A{Bowe}d says:

The new mirror is so much better for the space! Glad you scored on a good deal. :) I’m most excited for Snow White and the Huntsman. Why? One person- Chris Hemsworth. I’ll avert my eyes at Kristen Stewart, but he’s worth it.

  10. Alana says:

Great find! It looks really nice in your entry way!

  11. Greta has so many shoes, too–although in her case, it is because she grows out of them every month. Meh.

  12. meaganbriggs3 says:

And all the shoes basically belong to Brinley. That girl has so many shoes it is crazy!

  13. We are just now getting back to the movies after a 2 year hiatus. I guess having a child will do that. Hahaha. We now have two places to hang coats (our closet and the little hooks in the mudroom area by the garage. Will your new place have a coat closet? I just love a big mirror by the door.

  14. meaganbriggs3 says:

I am a huuuuuge Julia Roberts fan, but you know us, we never go to the movies lol, so I’ll probably see both when they make it to redbox.

I love that mirror! I really like our coat hook thing we made when we moved here, but it gets so FULL of coats (that we never wear lol since we live in a warm place) and looks cluttered so fast, but I love being able to hang things up. I have a great mirror I would love to put by the door, but I am in a dilemma! I can’t decide. I don’t know if we could do both in the new place. Ahhhh so many decisions. Lol

We have SO many shoes by the door it is embarrassing. I do really like the shoe storage from ikea (of course).

  15. Ooh what a great mirror deal! Looks great. I always have a mirror by my door too, after my Grandma’s tradition :) Is v. strategic. Am interested to see what you will do for your entry makeover!! We have a v. small space by our front door, so we did a little three-shelf bookcase – it’s v. functional, a shoe shelf for each of my husband and me, and on top we have a basket for mail etc :)
