Ode to Martha Stewart's Zinc

Last night, we painted the walls.  After demolition, framing out a wall, sheetrocking, and patching infinite holes in the ceiling and lots of other dirty jobs--we both agreed it felt great to do something pretty low key like painting walls.  Chris and I have painting down and we can knock out a room in about an hour.  We actually painted this space less than a year ago, but we aren't afraid to change our minds if things don't feel quite right.

The "Modern Family Blue" that we originally chose (actually Behr's Waterscape chosen specifically because we loved the blue wall on Modern Family) will still be hanging out on the walls in the mudroom/hallway, but for our family room we decided to tone it down and make things more moody.

So out went the light gray and blue:

And on went Martha Stewart's Zinc:

Okay, but really.  Martha Stewart's Zinc:

(Ooooohhh. Aaahhhhhh.)

This is where the built-ins will go--so no need to paint that wall.

We went with flat paint and color-matched it to Glidden.  We are first time Glidden users and we were very happy with the coverage.  We didn't even bother getting the paint and primer in one--just plain ol' Glidden and it took one coat.  Chris's brother, Brandon, just used it in his first home (I can't wait until they start blogging about that place.  It's gorg.), and Amanda from Our Humble A{Bowe}d also recommended it, so we thought we'd give it a try.  Verdict: We'd recommend it, too.  It goes on easy, covers great and only cost about $20.

As for the color itself--we totally love it.  It's sophisticated and warm.  It's dark and moody.  It is so soothing on the eyes.  What are your thoughts?  Do you see Zinc in your future?

If you are wondering about that plywood yonder--we are still waiting for the glass to arrive for our new window.  It was supposed to be here this morning along with our window guy around 9am.  The window guy showed up at 10:15 with no glass (he just wanted to finish up the sheetrock) and the carpet guy arrived at 10:30.  You can imagine it's been a tense morning, but we'll have a new carpet update for you tomorrow.  Let the visual progress begin!

Love the zinc!! We are repainting our bedroom right now and we've been trying to decide on colors...when your basement remodel came to mind. So I've got a question for you. Our bedroom has only one window in it (east facing but some of the light is covered by the neighbors gigantic tree) do you think this paint choice would make it too dark? I love the color but I wanted to see what you thought :)

  4. I think bedrooms are allowed to be a little dark and moody and, dare I say, sexy. I say, go for it! We did our bedroom with Martha Stewart's Mushroom--which is also dark and dramatic with a touch more brown--and it is completely cozy. Check it here: http://www.chrislovesjulia.com/2011/10/oh-my-lampa.html

Can't wait to see where you end up!

Great color! It definitely is dark, moody, and sophisticated. Love me a nice gray! And, I'm so glad you loved Glidden! Isn't is awesome?!?

  6. It's from Ikea! I believe its original intended use is a kitchen cabinet, but it works great as a floating console. Here's the link:

Or, if you are in Utah--we're selling ours for half the price since we are no longer using it.

    Good luck, Lara!

  7. Love the wall color, may need to use it our office. On another note, do you remember where you got the floating storage used underneath your TV? I'm looking for something like that and not having much luck. Thanks!

  8. I love the zinc. That's my type of gray fo sho. And it's super sexy, yet, kid-friendly. I like it a lot. You guys paint so fast! It would take me a year to get done what you have in a week.

  9. Busy Bees, you two! I love that you're not afriad of re-paints! My husband thinks I'm crazy when I repaint a room but sometimes a room just has to evolve.

  10. Oh thanks, you two! You are so kind. You guys are so awesome. We are so thrilled for you and your new opportunities in Tulsa. They are so lucky to have your family. And vacation?! Of course! Let's meet at a beach somewhere. :)

LOVE. Love so much. It is so warm but sexy at the same time. Can paint be sexy??? It just feels romantic. I'm so excited to see everything to come together!

Um Greta? Your bob is out of control. Love her.

  14. I DO love the color! I really like all Martha's colors...and I think Home Depot discontinued the "Martha" paint and automatically does it in Glidden now. Which is good...because the Martha paint was pretty poor quality....very drippy. Anyway...back to the color...I love it! It may be going in my kitchen, as I'm looking for some colors for there! Great choice!

I LOVE Martha Stewart's paint colors but I haven't used Zinc yet! Off to add that color to my "must paint with" list :)

I am living vicariously through you guys and it feels great.

  17. Love that color! I also like the blue peeking in through the hallway. They look good together! Are you planning on keeping the rails the same color? I know it was a pain in the booty to finish, so I'm just curious!

Btw, can't wait to see the new chalkboard drawing for this month.

  18. Yay for new carpet! We just had some installed yesterday. And I'm loving the Zinc! We used Olympic for our painting, but if Glidden only took one coat we're going to have to try it out!

  19. I have heard that the line has been discontinued. It is a shame it was such poor quality because the colors are so dreamy.

  20. Hahaha. We're here to serve you. Glad you're enjoying the ride, Melinda!

  21. The chalkboard drawing is done and at the printers! I am late on the reveal this month, but I should have that for everyone early next week. As for the railings--the plan is to totally change our railings out here and above the stairs to something more modern. As it stands now, I'll be the first to admit the color doesn't completely jive with the new paint color in the family room, but the question is can I hold out painting them until we just replace them altogether? Time will tell. ;)

  23. Rooms definitely need to evolve. Especially since paint is so affordable, why not be make it a color you are happy with? Although Chris teases me sometimes too. Haha

  27. Hi Chris & Julia,

I love the way Martha Stewart's Zinc turned out in your family room! I'd love to pin this to The Home Depot's Paint pinboard if you don't mind.
