Removing the wallpaper and painting the room improved things, but the oval mirror that was losing its frame and the worn and stained wood on the bottom had seen better days–maybe. Obviously the sink and faucet need replacing, but we are not sure we have the budget to do that right now–so I did what we could afford to do. The mini makeover cost me zero dollars and zero cents. (Try to look past to sink….plleeassseeee!)
I was not afraid to paint the vanity cabinet a bold color–and Martha Stewart’s Cornichon (leftover from this idea) was the perfect choice. It’s bold, but not crazy and it plays nicely with our home’s color palette of blues, purples, greens and neutral grays. The cabinet got a coat of primer, two coats of Cornichon, and a topcoat of clear, glossy sealant.
Another theme throughout our home is oil-rubbed bronze (ORB) details, so hanging our ORB mirror from Target that has been in storage since we moved was a no-brainer. I also spray-painted the little gold knobs with some Rustoleum oil-rubbed bronze that I always seem to have on hand.
While we need a new sink and faucet (I can’t look at these pictures without cringing. Why is everything in this home bisque-colored?!) we definitely bought the vanity cabinet some time, don’t ya think? At least that is what I am guessing Greta told me (we don’t understand a word she says) when she tested it out:
Psst. Did you know that “Cornichon” is the french word for “Gherkin?” Love me some pickles!
Our wood grain Shaker cabinet fronts were designed for busy, high-traffic homes like ours. Clad with durable textured thermofoils, this line is compatible with Sektion, Akurum, Godmorgon, and Besta cabinets from IKEA. It's the perfect, practical way to add the warmth of wood to all the rooms of your home.
We have teamed up with Loloi to create a line of rugs that are as affordable as they are beautiful. This collection houses a great mix of traditional and modern rugs, in cottage-y colorways, as well as vintage-inspired beauties that you’ll want to roll out in every room.
We partnered with Stuga on a line of hardwood floors — The Ingrid is really livable, and the color is very neutral. It doesn’t lean warm or cool, it’s that just right in-between. We have really loved putting it everywhere in our house. It’s the best jumping-off point for design, no matter your interior style. In addition to being beautiful, Ingrid is really durable — we have three kids, and we always have a home construction project going on. Ingrid stands up to it all.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]

It’s amazing what you can do with paint. You are so creative!
We have a plan for a long runner for the room. I’ll definitely be sharing those pics as soon as we get it in there!
Did you add a mat on the floor too?? New fluffy white mats (esp the ones from Ikea…….) are so nice and cozy too. I hate the look of the specific toilet mats, so I just have the big rectangle ones in all my bathrooms. YES all 3!!!!!! yikes.
