Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Chris was out of town all last week for work and during that time, the other room in our basement (the one that we aren’t currently turning into our guest room/office. whew!) flooded.  Not good.  Not gooood.  We rarely go in that room and by the time I noticed, it was the smell that I caught first.  Moldy and musty.  And not to sound like Kirk from the Bachelorette/Bach Pad, but mold has done horrible things for my health in the past.  Armed with our heavy-duty masks, we moved all of our stuff out of that room as fast as we could.  Unfortunately, a lot of damage had already been done.

We have been keeping all of our boxes of clothes, decorations, books and just things that we haven’t unpacked yet in that room and sadly, most of the boxes were soaked through.  We saved what we could and tossed the rest–including the carpet and carpet pad.  We were planning on tearing up the carpet in that room eventually, nothing like a little flood to put a spark under us.  Once we got the soaked carpet hauled out to the garage, we needed to tear out part of the drywall to see where the water was coming from.

We were secretly hoping that there was some sort of pipe leak because then our insurance would cover everything, but because it was raining almost every day last week, it likely isn’t a pipe issue. Meh.  Two parts of the base of the walls were the worst.  They had a ton of mold and they were on opposite walls:

Which meant we had to take off a lot of drywall.  We just stuck with cutting out the bottom of the drywall that was wet to see if we could assess where the water was coming from.

Verdict: We kinda still have no idea.  But there is clearly water coming from the window well.  In the picture above, you can see the water dripping from the window.  Argh.  So what’s next?  Hmmm.  We’ll let you know when we figure that out.

I am SO sorry! We just went through this same thing. Mold, ripping out floors and walls. YUK!!! Jeff felt bad, Chris tried asking him questions sunday but Ryder was all over the place. Have Chris give him a call. We learned a lot and were able to do it for as *inexpensive* as possible. (meaning, Jeff did a lot of it himself, not fun, but do-able)

  4. We are actually doing acid-stained concrete in the whole basement, which was the plan even before the flooding. But, I mean, this incident pretty much sealed the deal. :/

  5. How terrible!! That’s so annoying. Is your area prone to flooding because if it is, you may want to skip carpet down there (my parents’ basement floods all the time so they no longer have carpet – just tile and this faux wood product). I hope everything works out!!

Just had to tell you, this post showed up at the bottom of the other one and Weston insisted he see this picture BIG. :) He got a kick out of it! Aren’t you glad this is finished and done?!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
