Our countertops are muave. Pink, really.  And it has kinda been an elephant in the room on the blog.  Even when we painted our cabinets, it was such a big transformation–but it almost made the counters seem MORE pink.  And you all are too kind to say so.  But take another gander:

Right?  The truth is in the next year we plan on replacing the countertops completely.  And the cabinets. And the appliances.  And ripping out the pantry.  And adding some open shelving and backsplash.  All the goods.  But as for now, we are doing simple, cheap updates to alleviate headaches until we can save up enough money to tackle the large projects.  The pink countertops definitely give us a headache.

So, we picked up a product at Home Depot yesterday for $20 called countertop paint.  Rustoleum makes it and we have never tried it.  We don’t even know anyone that has tried it.  We’re CRAZY!  But for a short-term fix, we are gonna give it a go.

I promise to spill all the details about the product–including how it holds up, goes on, smells, and looks once we are finished.  And probably some other nitty grittys I hadn’t even thought of once we get ‘er done.  You’ll be hearing all of that soon because we plan on painting tonight.  :)

Bye Bye, Elephant!

Update:  See how they turned out right here.

  1. I have used this stuff before…and beware as its very messy (similar to the consistency of nail polish) and smells super strong, so you might want to make sure the windows are open or your little nugget is out of the house. its oil based, so if you get it on clothing/etc, its super difficult to get out and wear gloves, as i had stains on my hands for weeks. Also had an unfortunate issue with some getting in my hair, which lead to me having to trim off about 4 inches, so be careful. The finished product looked okay, definitely an easy quick fix. looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

  2. How exciting! :) I love changes – even if they are just the economical kind. Sometimes those turn out the best! :)
I’m anxious to see what it looks like!

  3. i like the pink, but you’re right, it doesn’t match your decor at all! it woudl have to be in the right context to tbe cool. i’ve seen other blogs where they use that stuff and it works; good luck with it! love the roman shade; i made one recently but just used the ‘skeleton’ of the horizontal blinds, fabric, and glue- i’m sure yours is much better, lol. :) your house is looking great!
