Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

This morning, while Greta was busy dancing with her reflection in a full-length mirror I pulled out, I unrolled our zebra rug and gathered up some random things to fill that shelf above the couch.

I had every intention of the items being temporary until I painted something else or had more pictures printed–but to my surprise, I totally dig the vignette I ended up with.  I layered art and mirrors and objects and photos and they all magically worked together.  Even better, they are out of reach of little hands.  Ahem, Greta.

Nothing is new, but from left to right we have:  Chris’s guitar that must remain handy because he plays it frequently, two candlesticks that I snagged for pretty much free, a mirror I covered in fabric that goes so nicely with our new blue wall, an aquatint print I did of my parents in college, a painting I did of our last name and anniversary, two small photos of Chris and I on our wedding day and on our cruise, a matching mirror, my favorite penguin, and a clock that balanced out the guitar.

The only thing I hung was the clock, but I will also hang the guitar slightly off the mantle so it is more secure.  Everything else is leaning up against each other like best friends all huddled around the sectional.  We plan to address the lighting situation here, as well.

But, as you can see, there are pa-lenty of other things we have to work on in this room first. Yowzas.

Andi- Patty taught me last night. It’s as simple as going into New Post and clicking “edit pages.” Each page is a different tab. So, so simple.

Meags-The shelf was there! The wall sticks out a bit and creates a nice mantle. Not sure why because they had there living room set up really weird and weren’t even utilitzing it, but we are happy it was there, now. As for the blank wall–I think one large family picture might be perfect, we’ll see.

This is great!!! I love that shelf up there, I’ve been meaning to tell you. Was it there when you moved in??? It’s awesome. I wonder though, with now all that stuff up there, if there should be a fun picture wall on that blank wall… Might be like TOO much stuff. But who am I to say? We have at max 3 pictures on each wall….we do want to get a collage wall going. I’m going to take your HOW-TO with the paper+nails and then tear the paper down and your nails are all set read to go.

Anyways, I love the rug. That rug with the blue wall is goooorgeous.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
