Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

Ha!  While you may not be able to see a huge difference in the above pictures–trust us, it looks very different in person.  Soft, warm, relaxing…all things a bedroom should be.  Not convinced?  I’ll show you a few more pictures as I give you a tour of our in-progress bedroom (Oh, and those panels are DEF getting new fabric):
Now you can see it, huh?  The pic on the left is before we added Valspar’s Notre Dame to the walls, as seen in the photo on the right.  Lowe’s wouldn’t color match it to Olympic’s no-VOC paint like they did when we painted our front area with a Benjamin Moore swatch (probably because Valspar is Lowe’s signature line and they don’t want to take business away from themselves).  At any rate, the coverage was great and we only had to do one coat, but the fumes were/are bad.  Right above our bed, we’re planning on a large shelf with a painting hanging above it and our oversized “C” and “J” letters propped on the shelf.
This is the view from across from our bed.  The TV and dresser (I found at the ReStore for $20) used to be on the wall on the right there.  NOT comfy to watch television constantly looking to your right,  so we remounted it on Saturday after we were done painting.  We still need to hide the cords (no worries) and refinish the dresser–which will happen as soon as the weather gets warmer.
This is the view from over by the desk (see top picture) looking out of our room into the hall.  The far door, next to the penguin, is Greta’s room.  You can barely see it from this picture, but the paint color in the hall and our room are close, however, Notre Dame is a lot warmer than Whitestone, which was the plan all along.  Now bring your eyes back into our room.  To that wall where the TV used to be.  Where a large mirror, some form of art will be soon.  I have a lot of walls to fill.  Which is a good thing because I have about 6 different ideas bouncing around in my head of things I can fill them with.  This is the fun part.  Creating and decorating on a budget—so it doesn’t LOOK like I was on a budget.  Let the fun begin (as soon as Greta wakes up from her nap. :) )!!

What do you think?

  1. Target! I did recover the shades with fabric for a more custom look.

Those lamps on both sides of your bed–where are they from? Nice!

  3. Great color, great blog! Old post I know, but I had to comment..

I had that SAME problem at our Lowe’s! The salesperson was very confrontational and rude, like I had offended him by even asking. I ended up buying the Valspar, but I’m glad I read your post. My project is in the kids’ room (hence why I wanted no-VOC) and I think I’ll be waiting till I have the funds to purchase another can.

    Thanks so much!

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
