Befores, afters, mood boards, plans, failures, wins. We’ve done a lot of projects, and they’re all here.

We have a long-standing relationship with DIY, and love rolling our sleeves up and making it happen.

Even when you don’t want to rip down a wall, you can make that space in your home better. Right now.

I am really glad I had those two hours to myself last Saturday, before the accident.  I had been dying to hang some pictures in Greta’s room and turns out, she loves power tools.  A little too much.   And it’s not like I can hang stuff in her room while she is napping.  So when Chris took her shopping with him, that gave me the perfect opportunity to get some things in her room hung.

I spent a total of $5 on frames, and all but one of the frames had real glass in great condition.  I snagged the HUGE frame below with real glass and a luxe cloth mat for $3 at DI.  I don’t know what someone was thinking with that picture inside, but I also don’t know what EVERYONE else was thinking not buying this.  I mean I go to DI like once every other month just to look for frames.  I doubt this got there the day I did.  When you are looking for frames, don’t look at the color of the frame, or the picture inside.  I try to find ones that are a good size for cheap, have glass in tact, and have an easy way to remove whatever is inside.

So, 5 frames for $5, and one was $3…I’d say I did pretty good, huh?  As you can see they were an assortment of colors, so I picked up some Krylon Fusion spray paint in white.  This is pretty important.  If you have even a glimmer of doubt that your frames are 100% wood, this paint will save you from lots of dripping and bubbling.  In my case, I knew I that Mr. $3 was solid wood,  but I also had 2 metal ones and 2 plastic ones.  So the Fusion spray paint covered all of my bases.  It’s a little more (like $4.50), but completely worth doing the job right.

Here is a shot of all the things I hung.  Yes, we are still dying for curtains after my last failed attempt, but those will come soon. You may also recognize I rearranged a bit.  For the longest time I was stuck on hanging one or two pictures in the entire room, and this not only gave me the opportunity to add lots of color, but also to showcase different projects I have done.

On the left side of the window you may recognize:

1.  That recovered mirror from our bedroom. I really felt like it would fit better in Greta’s room.  Those mirrors have been in our room since we got married, and before that they were in my bedroom when I was single.  I was overdue for a change and now we are dreaming up some art for above our bed.

2.  The silhouette below the mirror from this project.

3.  The painting of the mama deer I did before Greta was born.

4.  The adorable fabric I finally found a use for!  I used the $3 frame from DI to show off the cutesy fabric-turned-art.

On the right side of the wall, you may recognize:

1.  Another one of the mirrors from our bedroom.

2.  The baby deer painting I did before Greta was born.

3.  The graphic Gs typography project.

I also hung:

4.  The three ultrasounds we got when I was preggers.

5.  A colored pencil drawing I did when I was a junior in high school.

Overall, I am uber-pleased with all of the color that it added to her room, not to mention interest.  I also like how every thing hung is something I created.  Maybe one day Greta will even appreciate that.

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
