Back in August, I got super sick of looking at my mis-matched nursery furniture.  Remember that?  (You can read all about it here).  I tackled the rocking chair and the changing table in a week, painting them both a creamy white. Not only did it allow the beautiful crib to really shine, but it also unified the other furniture.  Recently, the changing table has been getting a lot of nicks in it.  And once I attached Greta’s mobile to the side and then took it off a day later due to her practically pulling it on top of herself (see ya next baby, mobile!) there was A TON of that white creamy paint that came off with it.  When I was examining how I was going to fix it, I noticed the paint was hardly even adhered to the dresser.  What?!  All of my hard work!  I used two coats of primer and the rocking chair is still going strong with its new coat of paint, so I concluded that the changing table’s surface must be too slick.  So, I took the weekend to peel all of the paint off…well, almost all of it.

Most of it peeled off in HUGE sheets, which was actually kind of fun.  Do you take joy in peeling dried elmer’s glue of your hands or is it just me?  Getting all the tiny, stubborn pieces off wasn’t as fun–until Chris and I discovered razor blades really help get the job done–plus, razor blades got Chris on board.  The trim and knobs of the dresser must have been a little more rough, because that paint wasn’t going anywhere, so I embraced it.  I actually like how it ties in the dark wood of the crib and the creamy white of the rocking chair…but in two months, it might change again. :)

A reader recently asked me if I’m starting to fully embrace traditional style and whether we still consider our house to be a “modern Colonial” and why. It was a really great question and so timely — I had really just been thinking about my approach to this home and how my style has changed […]
